International Community Dinner

Strengthening Community through Sharing Food & Stories

We are hosting a FREE monthly dinner for Boise’s international communities. This event is open to the public.

In addition to being served dinner, participants are encouraged to share community wants, needs, and offers to help. The dinner is a potluck and all are welcome to attend.

Impacts of Acculturation on Refugee Couples

4 Hour CEU – 8:00 am – 12:00 pm

This training will review common identity changes that occur during acculturation particularly in individual identity, gender roles and parenting roles and the importance of communication as the acculturation process proceeds.

Training objectives include encouraging participants to reflect on their own process of identity formation, articulate how ethnic identity may change after resettlement, describe the cultural influences on their own development of gender role expectations, discuss the gender role changes that can happen after resettlement in a host culture, apply multidimensional acculturation theory to the process they have witnessed with refugees, understand the process of social identity change and integration that can happen after resettlement, and utilize strategies for helping couples cope with the impacts of change on their marriage and parenting roles.

Racial/Ethnic identity formation is a complex process which is made even more difficult for people, such as refugees and immigrants, who have lived in a variety of cultures during their developmental years.

This training seeks to familiarize participants with the difficult identity task for refugees and immigrants and to offer guidance about how we can be helpful in that process.
